三魂七魄
The Three Ethereal Souls & the Seven Corporeal Souls [part 2]:
The Seven Corporeal Souls point to joy, anger, worry, fear, love, hatred and desire [xi nu ai ju ai wu yu喜怒哀惧爱恶欲] existing within the substantial. Therefore when the human body parts from this world, the Seven Corporeal Souls disperse and fade away. Thereafter in accordance with the form of flesh once again the physical body and the Corporeal Soul [rou ti ji po肉体及魄] are created, which belongs to the Yang World’s material realm [yang shi de wu zhi sh ijie阳世的物质世界].In the Daoist Canon‘s [dao zang道藏]《Seven Tablets in a Cloudy Satchel》[yun ji qi qian 云芨七籖] it is recorded:
三魂:夫人身有三魂,一名胎光,太清阳和之气也;一名爽灵,阴气之变也;一名幽精,阴气之杂也。七魄:其第一魄名尸狗,其第二魄名伏矢,其第三魄名雀阴,其第四魄名吞贼,其第五魄名非毒,其第六魄名除秽,其第七魄名臭肺。
The Three Ethereal Souls: This human body has Three Ethereal Souls, one [soul] is named Embryonic Brightness, it is the harmonized Qi of Great Clarity; One [soul] is named Clear Divinity, it is the change of Yin-Qi; one is named Serene Essence, it is the mingled Yin-Qi. The
Seven Corporeal Souls: Their first Corporeal Soul is named Corpse Canine, their second Corporeal Soul is named Concealed Arrow, their third Corporeal Soul is named Sparrow Yin, their fourth Corporeal Soul is named Swallowing Thieves, their fifth Corporeal Soul is named
Non-Poison, their sixth Corporeal Soul is named Eliminating Filth, their seventh Corporeal Soul is named Rotting Lungs.”
In Ge Hong’s [葛洪] 《Master of Embracing Simplicity》[bao pu zi抱朴子] in the chapter entitled Earthly Truth [di zhen地真] it is written:
师言欲长生,当勤服大药,欲得通神,当金水分形。形分则自见其身中之三魂七魄,而天灵地祇,皆可接见,山川之神,皆可使役也。
The masters said wishing for long life, [one] ought to ingest the Great Medicine regularly. Wishing to obtain the communion with the Spirit, [one] ought to divide the form of Metal and Water. The form’s division are the Three Ethereal Souls and the Seven Corporeal Souls within the body seen by oneself, and all Heavenly Divinities and Earthly Deities can be received. [And] all Spirits of the mountains and waters can be employed in [one’s] service.
