土地公【土地神】 The Earth Deity [Spirit of the Earth and Soil]

土地公【土地神】
The Earth Deity [Spirit of the Earth and Soil]
___________________________________________

The Earth Deity is commonly celebrated on the 2nd day of the 2nd lunar month, [1] which falls onto the 24th February in 2020.

The Earth Deity is local spirit who looks after the local communities. The local Spirits are featured frequently in the 《Journey to the West》[xi you ji 西游记] where they assist the Monkey King, Sun Wu Kong [2], to defeat monsters and demons by providing him with crucial information.
In the Daoist Complete Realization [quan zhen全真] tradition there is even a incantation or invocation dedicated to pacifying the ground and Earth aptly called ‘Pacifying the Earth Incantation‘ [an tu di zhou 安土地咒], which is recited as part of the 《Morning Liturgy》 [zao gong ke 早功课], ( this translation is taken from fiveimmortals.com):

元始安镇,普告万灵,岳渎真官,土地祇灵,左社右稷,不得妄惊,回向正道,内外澄清,各安方位,备守 家庭,太上有命,搜捕邪精,护法神王,保卫诵经,皈依大道,
元亨利贞。

Yuan Shi[3] pacifying and suppressing,
Universally announces to the Ten Thousand Divinities,
To the True Officials of the Mountains and Rivers,
To the Divinities of the Earth,
On the left to the Deities of Soil,
On the right to the Deities of Grains,
Do not be presumptuous or frightened,
Turn back toward the Upright Dao,
Inside and outside clear and pure,
Each of them peacefully in position,
Prepare and guard the court of the home,
Tai Shang [4] is in command,
Searching and seizing evil essences,
The ‘Protector of the Law’ Spirit King,
Guards and defends the chanting of the Scriptures,
Return and rely [5] on Great Dao,
Primal, prosperous, favourable, steadfast [6].

[1] In the Gregorian calendar this date will vary from year to year and not be identical.

[3] Yuan Shi Tian Zun (元始天尊), the Heavenly Worthy of Primordial Beginning, is the first amongst the three highest deities of the Daoist pantheon, the Three Purities (San Qing 三清); he represents the cosmic and creative aspect of the Dao.
[4] Tai Shang (太上), the Supreme Sovereign, designates as a whole the three highest deities of the Daoist pantheon, the Three Purities (San Qing 三清), and is the author of 《Tai Shang’s Treatise on Action and Response》available on Purple Cloud Press soon.
[5] Gui Yi(皈依)is commonly translated as ‘Taking Refuge’, especially in the context of Buddhist Scriptures.
[6] These four words originate from the 《Book of Changes》[yi jing 易经].
