The Essentials of the Shortcut to the Great Achievement by Liu Hua Yang

Liu Hua Yang together with Wu Shou Yang [伍守阳] make up the so-called Wu-Liu School with its main focus on Internal Alchemy [nei dan 內丹]. The former is also the author of the Scripture of Wisdom and Life [hui ming jing慧命經].
The following chapter 17 entitled The Civil Fire’s Marvellous Effects [wen huo miao yong文火妙用] from the alchemical classic The Essentials of the Shortcut to the Great Achievement [da cheng jie yao大成捷要] is a pure translation, whereas the first sixteen chapter are interspersed with explanations by our teacher Li Shifu from Five Immortals Temple. In his own words this scripture is worth being translated:
…in order to transmit it to everyone with destiny in each and every country in the West, in order to explicate the upright principles of cultivation, in order to ignite a Heavenly light, as well as to make it unlikely for anyone to end up in misinterpretations and in losing one’s direction and way.

此调外药叫间用武火锻炼，元气皈宿本宫，即当止住有为之风火。再用无为之神火，时刻温养，以真意轻轻主照，若存若亡，勿今间断。安神于气穴之内知而不守，使自然之吹嘘，绵绵不绝，念兹在兹，先存后亡，而入于混沌杳冥者也。吹嘘之气，乃后天之呼吸，引动先天之气机。神不离于气穴，自然往来无穷。行住坐卧，不离方寸之地，盖文火温养，是处常也。武火锻炼，是达变也。又曰 : 武火烹炼，文火沐浴，炼精化气，俱是文武二火用事者也。

This compounding of the external medicine is called intermediate and temporary use of martial fire refinement. [When] the original Qi takes refuges to the lodge of the Original Palace, then undertake the cessation of the presence of active wind-fire.
Again use the non-active Spirit-Fire, the moment of warming and nourishing. Employ the true intent lightly and gently as main illumination, – as if existing as if not existing. Do not disrupt [it] as of today. The calm Spirit inside the Qi-point, – being aware as well as not guarding [it]-, make it naturally blow and roar continuously. Fix your attention on what you are doing, first preserve and exist – later perish, and enter in the primordial chaos far and indistinct. Blowing and roaring Qi, thus the Post-Heaven inhaling and exhaling, stirring up Pre-Heavens Qi-mechanism. the Spirit does not separate from the Qi-point, naturally coming and going boundlessly. Travelling-stopping-sitting- lying, do not separate the Square Inch’s grounds, for the Civil Fire warms and nourishes It is because it is everywhere and constant. the Martial Fire’s refinement is for reaching transformation.
Furthermore it is said:
The Martial Fire is boiling refinement, the Civil Fire is bathing, taking a bath, refining Essence and transmute it into Qi. [It is] complete only if the Civil and Martial two Fires are employed to this matter.
